The “Mercado de Bais” traces its origins back to 1917 when the Public Market, then known as “Mercado Publico,” began operating under Ordinance No. 76, S. 1917. In 1961, Mayor Hermenegildo G Villanueva initiated renovations through a loan of Php 150,000.00 from GSIS. However, a fire in April 2000 halted its existence.
Under Mayor Hector C. Villanueva, plans for a new public market were studied, leading to the construction of “Mercado de Bais” in 2009, with an initial funding of Php 242,000,000.00 approved by SP Resolution No. 262, S. 2009. The project was endorsed by SP Resolution No. 317, S. 2011, dated August 15, 2011, approved by Mayor Karen F. Villanueva.
Key Events:
Groundbreaking: December 16, 2009, led by Mayor Hector C. Villanueva
Blessing and Dedication: September 7, 2011, led by Mayor Karen F. Villanueva, with guest of honor President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III and the Vice Mayor with members of Sangguniang Panlungsod.
And now, the days of the Marcado de Bais are numbered, because it is converted to a mall.
Some market vendors left for the Satellit public market others prefered to set up makeshift stallls in the sidestreets, as we will see in this video. Vendors and customers are not pleased with this situation and let me know while filming.
I met also the city engineer with his crew with the preparations for the Christmas decoration at the Bais City Plaza.
I also went to the Satellite Public Market with integrated bus terminal and also found here a lot of friendly people, had a cold drink at one of the carinderias before heading back to.
