I had found rice fields in the hinterland of Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental, Philippines on the map and wanted to visit them.

This endeavor turned out to be pretty easy at first, as I found the turnoff from National Highway 7 pretty quickly and also the first rice fields.

Unfortunately, apart from a few herons, there was no active life here. From here on, the road got bad and even worse at the next houses, but I didn’t want to give up because I knew there were still plenty of rice fields. I slowly fought my way around and over the stones on the path. I was rewarded with a view of some rice fields where people were working with carabaos and hand tractors, preparing to plant new rice seedlings.

Last but not least, I met a Filipina who had built her residence here on the edge of rice fields with a view of the island of Apo on one side and the volcano Mount Talinis on the other. She was actually from Dumaguete City, but had lived in Japan for a long time and married a Japanese man.

It’s always amazing what stories you get to hear when you talk to people.
