SIBULAN – The Town

Sibulan is a town in Negros Oriental province. It is a thin strip of land running across the southeast of Negros Oriental facing Siquijor and Cebu islands across the Tañon Strait. Sibulan is approximately 5 km north of the bustling city of Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental, which is just a 20-minute drive away. Moreover, Sibulan is close to Cebu island. The airport of Dumaguete is located in Sibulan, and the Sibulan sea-port serves as the main gateway for a trip to Cebu island. The ferry ride from Sibulan to Cebu takes approximately 30 minutes. If one wishes to travel with a vehicle, a Ro-Ro is also available for crossing the Tañon Strait.

The Spaniards named this area the “Land of Sibuls” due to its abundant springs. Over time, the name was modified to Sibulan. In 1838, this town became a Parish under secular order. In 1856, the parish was occupied by a regular church priest. Then, in 1910, Sibulan was established as a municipality and had its initial set of municipal government officials in accordance with Act No. 82 of the Philippine Commission dated January 31, 1910.
